When preservation is needed, we choose only natural, eco-certified ingredients crafted to work harmoniously within organic formulations, so your product stays pure, fresh, and effective.

All of our products are cruelty-free and made without animal-derived ingredients. Many include precious bee-created gifts, like honey, propolis, and beeswax, cherished for their skin-repairing properties. For this reason, our line is not fully vegan.

Most ELLARA products remain fresh for 6–12 months after opening. Because we use pure, active botanicals, we recommend storing them away from direct sunlight and heat.

This advanced method draws out the plant’s full spectrum of beneficial compounds, including its lipids, antioxidants, vitamins, and phytonutrients, without the use of heat or harsh chemical solvents.

Unlike essential oils, which capture only a plant’s volatile aroma molecules, CO₂ extracts preserve the entire healing profile of the plant, making them more potent and nutrient-rich. They are also free of potential skin irritants often found in essential oils, making them ideal for sensitive and reactive skin types.

CO₂ extracts often differ dramatically from their essential oil counterparts because they capture the full spectrum of a plant’s therapeutic constituents—not just the volatile aromatic molecules. For example, Turmeric CO₂ contains curcumin, one of turmeric’s most powerful anti-inflammatory compounds, while turmeric essential oil contains none. Calendula CO₂ includes faradiol esters and healing triterpenoids that simply don’t distill into an essential oil at all. Calendula CO₂ is actually a wax, not an oil. Ginger CO₂ carries gingerols and shogaols—responsible for ginger’s warming, antioxidant activity—whereas the essential oil only contains lighter, volatile sesquiterpenes. No. Our products have a light, natural aroma that comes only from the plants themselves. We never add synthetic fragrance or essential oils. Our founder is extremely sensitive to scent (even pure essential oils) so every formula is intentionally created to be gentle on both skin and senses.

Instead of fragrance, we use CO₂ extracts, which capture the full spectrum of a plant’s healing compounds without the intensity of essential oils. None of our hydrosols or extracts are produced in copper stills. At ELLARA, we distill many of our hydrosols in small batches using fresh botanicals from our own organic garden and a 100% food-grade stainless steel still, and partner only with farms that distill using 100% food-grade stainless steel stills as well.

Why are we not a fan of copper distillation? Copper is a reactive metal that can leach trace amounts into the finished hydrosols, especially with acidic botanicals like rosemary or peppermint. Stainless steel, on the other hand, is inert and non-reactive — ensuring your hydrosols remain chemically stable, uncontaminated, and gentle even for sensitive skin. This process preserves the integrity and energetic purity of each plant.

It’s worth noting that while most essential oils are traditionally distilled in copper, CO₂ extracts are made exclusively in stainless steel machines, ensuring unmatched purity and potency.

Beeswax, secreted by worker bees, forms the golden foundation of the honeycomb. It is rich in natural esters and fatty acids that help seal in moisture and soften the skin.

Propolis Wax is the bees’ alchemy. It is a golden fusion of beeswax and botanical resins gathered from the living world around them. As honeybees move from flower to flower, they collect not only nectar and pollen, but tiny droplets of resin — the protective coatings that plants use to seal and heal their own surfaces. Within the hive, the bees mix these fragrant resins with wax and enzymes, transforming them into propolis, a substance they use to fortify and protect their home.

When we receive propolis from our small, family-owned apiary partners, we handle it with great care, gently separating the true propolis resin from the wax at the lowest possible temperature to preserve its remarkable vitality. When the wax is isolated, it is far richer in bioactive compounds (flavonoids, aromatic acids, polyphenols) than pure beeswax, giving it a stronger aroma and more protective characteristics.
